So many gadgets, so little time

1/04/2017

The GizmoEditor is back in Las Vegas for another CES, the sprawling consumer tech trade shows that fills two convention centers and several hotels.

When I was writing a consumer electronics column for The Courier-Journal and started coming the the shows 34 years ago, it was to hear fantastic audio systems and see the latest video recorders, TVs, computers and electronic games.

Much as changed over the years. Pones and tablets are far more prominent than computers. Streaming media has replaced DVDs and much of the audio industry. The gaming folks have their own trade show, as does the adult video industry, which used to be part of CES.

Many of the big names such as Samsung, Sony and LG are here and they are on my list of displays to check out. So are many car manufacturers, here to show their futuristic vehicles and cockpits.

But I will also be meeting with the small startups, coders and inventors pitching their new ideas, apps and devices. They will have tiny booths in the Sands convention halls and simple tables at Pepcom and ShowStoppers, two after-hours events for the press.

I’ll be checking out a robotic babysitter, a WiFi toothbrush and a paper drone along with lots of wearable gadgets, health monitors and smart home devices.

I’ll be in Vegas for the next four days and will be posting photos and updates here and on Twitter @ricmanning #GizmoEditor and maybe on Instagram as well.

So many gadgets, so little time.
