Inventor brings smarts to Mason Jar lids

6/22/2015

Since before the Civil War, the Mason Jar has helped cooks and gardeners preserve fruits or vegetables from well past the prime of their summer gardens. Now some of its admirers are poised to give it a new role in a new century.

The Smart Mason Lid is on track to be the first product within a Smart Mason brand. Stuffed with modern electronics, the Smart Mason Lid functions just like an electronic kitchen scale. The lid can communicate with mobile phones and other devices and be paired with third-party applications for nutrition tracking, recipe discovery, loyalty/shopping, and other roles. Later versions will be able to sense temperature and humidity.

Place the lid underneath a jar as you add ingredients and a the connected mobile device will calculate calories and nutrients inside the jar. It can also be used as a simple digital kitchen scale.

The developers of the Smart Mason Lid hope to launch the project on a funding platform like Kickstarter in late summer or early fall. The target price for consumers will be about $50.

Once the campaign is launched, software developers will be able to apply to use the Smart Mason software developer’s kit and APIs to create apps that will be available with the lids comes to the market.
