MP3 Box app can find millions of songs

3/01/2015

Does the Internet hold a copy of every recorded song? That's the question I tried to answer after I got my hands on MP3 Box, a free app that its creators say can search and retrieve more than 20 million songs.

The app does searches based on a number of index elements such as song title, artist name or genre as well as hashtags like #rock, #80s, #party or #relax.

Recent pop hits and big-name artists were easy for MP3 Box. I pulled up scads of titles by Beyonce and Bruce Springsteen. I was more impressed when the app found more obscure music like jazz tracks by Art Pepper, old folk tunes Woody Guthrie and classic blues by Howlin's Wolf. I even got astronaut Chris Hadfield covering David Bowie's Space Oddity, William Shatner's interpretation of Rocket Man and Steve Martin's comedy bit Excuse Me.

Click on one of the titles in the listed results and the app will play and show the accompanying video, if there is one, or show an album cover or image or photo of the artist. In some cases, it offers a link to a free download. MP3 Box will also create a radio channel based on your music preferences or artists.

Check out the iOS version of MP3 Box in the Apple iTunes App Store.
