The DVD makes it debut

It seems like DVD players have been around forever. They’re in our computers and our home stereos and you can pick one up for about $30 at Walmart or Target. But it was only 1997 when the first DVD players appeared carrying price tags of about $600.

It would be a few more years before movies on digital discs were as close as a Blockbuster store at the strip mall, a Netflix envelope in your mailbox or a red kiosk at the local McDonald's or convenience store.

I wrote about their debut in a cover story for Scene, the weekend entertainment tabloid published by The courier-Journal in Louisville, KY. This is a PDF version of that article.
